EA announces Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11

Tiger Woods with a trophy. Finally, there’s a corporation in the world that’s willing to move on from Tiger’s sex life and continue to endorse him for what he does best (yes, better than cheating on his wife – he failed at keeping that quiet): playing golf. EA officially announced today that Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11 is in development.

The game will launch in June of this year for the Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, and the iPhone. I really wish there were more jokes to be had at Tiger’s expense, but really I’m just glad that this little saga is at the beginning of its end.

Sure, Tiger’s income looks a lot more like a trickle than the insane waterfall of years past, but it’s better than nothing, right?

Halo: Reach beta footage surfaces

Reach beta homescreenAs with the last several Halo titles, Reach already has some “leaked footage.” It gets the quotes because really, it could be fake. It could be viral marketing. It could even be leaked footage, but whatever the case, this thing is questionable.

The video opens on the boot screen, which features this message:

Welcome to the Halo: Reach Public Beta, the experience you are about to enjoy is an early sample of a few multiplayer and single-player levels from Halo: Reach, launching exclusively on Xbox 360 later this year. Until then, drive [sic] into Activities or Campaign and have a blast.

The text is pretty sloppy, which makes me lean toward the fake side of the boat. The video also leaks a new mode called “Murder Mode” that supposedly allows you to kill enemies without being seen. I could have sworn that was the bludgeon to the back of the head move. Also, why would it be called “Murder Mode?” Why not call it a “Murder Skill,” unless it allows you to become invisible for an extended period of time, which really isn’t so different from the Arbiter’s cloak skill in Halo 3.

Microsoft says the 360 hasn’t even reached the hill

Xbox 360 family. Our current console generation is set to be one of the longest in the industry. Sony has often commented that the PS3 is on a 10-year plan, same with the PSP. That puts the former right around its midlife crisis, and like any good mid-lifer, it went and slimmed down, smartened up, and managed to find its way into more homes than any other time in its life (I don’t know that the last one actually works in my metaphor, but hey). Microsoft isn’t ready to send its console over the hill just yet.

Speaking to the Guardian UK at CES this year, Microsoft’s David Hufford said the Xbox 360 hasn’t even made it halfway through its lifecycle. Project Natal and upgrades to the Xbox Live service are planned to prolong the life of the console well into the new decade.

“I think it’s important to say that the Xbox 360 is the console of the long future for us,” Hufford said. “There is no need to launch a new console, because we’re able to give this console new life either with software upgrades or hardware upgrades like Project Natal.”

It’s funny. As much as people gripe that PC gaming is over, consoles are starting to emulate PCs. We’ve just seen consoles succeed in the same way Apple has, by marrying hardware and software control under one roof.

Target starts $99 ripoff servce

Target store. In an effort to completely ripoff unsuspecting and technologically challenged individuals, Target will be starting a console setup service. It only costs $99!

Part of the cost is that the service is actually performed by a third party, Zip Installation, but it’s still an absurd purchase. For just $99 they will come and actually plug the console into the TV for you, with proper color matching and all. They’ll also configure the console (it comes “configured” out of the box), enable parental controls for you, set up and optimize your wireless router, register your online accounts, and set up your PC for media streaming.

Never you mind that those things have clear walkthroughs included with every console, and that you might be increasing the cost of your console by up to 50%.

Razer going after the console market

RZR_XboxControllerView7_WhtBrgIt was only a matter of time, really. PC peripheral manufacturer Razer has decided to enter the console market, starting with the Xbox 360. The company has preliminary approval from Microsoft to release a 360 controller and headset.

The controller, called the Onza, will run $50 for the wired version, supposedly for a lag-free game experience (what wireless tech are you guys using again?), no word on a wireless version. It looks almost exactly like the Microsoft controller, except that the start and back buttons have been moved. Oh, there are also some pretty lights. Razer also boasts a new Hyperesponse technology, which means I dunno, it starts firing before you see your enemies?

The headset will be wireless, featuring a 5.1 virtual surround system and the ability to chain-gang base stations for private team conversations. It’s like party chat! The headset also has some noise-canceling features, so you can really tune out that nagging girlfriend. The headset will run $130. Read more at Razer’s official press site.
