Minecraft 1.5 released

Minecraft 1.5 launched just a couple days ago, bringing a few new craftables, some performance updates, and weather! So far the performance updates have been the best part. I’m getting 80+ FPS while running around in single player worlds, where before I was somewhere around the mid 30s depending on chunk loads. I’m also really excited about the way weather works. I was always sad to see it in YouTube videos since it was gone by the time I started seriously playing. It will be nice to have it back.

I’ve included a couple screenshots with the post to show off some of the new features. The texture pack I’m using is called Coterie if you’re interested. In one picture you’ll notice the “crying obsidian” texture – that’s actually been replaced with a sidegrass texture in 1.5. Other than that, enjoy the pics – share some of your own in the comments if you have them. Has anyone seen lightning yet?

FG Minecraft Mondays are on – 8 PM EST

minecraft_mondays

Last week was LoL week, which means we’re on to Minecraft this week. I know 8 is a little early for some of you west coasters, but I’ve got a commitment later in the evening. As usual, we’ll be playing on the server DarkTide, which you can locate at mc.thedarktide.net. Log in, check out the main city, and if you want to stick around, make a post on their minecraftforum.net thread with your info and you’ll be whitelisted to build.

I currently run a town on the server by the name of Landfall. We’re way up north, currently working to expand our protected regions. Log on and check us out. You can find me playing as “TheWuggler.”

Achievements, statistics and weather to hit Minecraft 1.5

Minecraft Snow.

Notch made a blog post this week announcing the official release date for Minecraft. The post also detailed some of the features we can expect in 1.5, not the least of which is the return of weather. Weather used to be in the game but was removed at some point for resource management concerns. It’s making a comeback, as are achievements and statistics.

I’m curious to see how achievements and stats will be tracked. I’d love to be able to log in to Minecraft.net to compare my stats and achievements to those of my friends. It will be interesting to see the types of achievements that Mojang thinks are most difficult or interesting to get.

Jens Bergensten – one of the coders at Mojang – has also been tweeting a good bit about adding the piston mod to Minecraft. It’s not definite, but if he’s spending a lot of time on it I’d be willing to bet that it will make an appearance in some way, shape, or form.

FG Minecraft Mondays tonight – 9:30 PM EST

minecraft_mondays

It’s Monday, and though that hasn’t meant a ton of game time together lately, we are on for tonight. I know we’ve missed League of Legends for a couple weeks in a row, but I think it will be good to settle into a Minecraft schedule as well. We’ll pick back up with LoL next week (hopefully with Lee Sin in the mix).

So tonight, get ready to get your Minecraft on. As I’ve mentioned before, I’m currently playing on a server called DarkTide. You can check out their official website/forums at your leisure, but make sure to get whitelisted on their minecraftforum.net thread.

I’ll be in game as “TheWuggler.” A few friends and I have a protected village known as Landfall and I would be happy to help you find your way out there once you’re online. Hope to see you online tonight.

Wolf/Dog mob is taking shape in Minecraft

Minecraft dogs.

Mojang’s Jens Bergenstetn has been tweeting today about the wolf/dog mob Notch leaked a few weeks ago. Apparently it’s moving along pretty well, well enough for working models anyway. Jens, who tweets under the pseudonym @jeb_, posted the picture you see above.

I’ll be interested to see how the pet system is implemented. My mind is still a little blown by the possibilities of large scale Minecraft PvP, but I’m open to Mojang adding new features, too.
