Getting your girlfriend into gaming

Here’s a classic video from gaming queen Tara Babcock as she explains how to get your girlfriend into gaming. It’s hilarious and useful as well, so check it out.

Still, keep in mind that if you’re obsessed with gaming and play all the time, it will hurt you with the ladies even if they like games! You have to pay attention to a girlfriend, so keep that in mind as well.

Taste in games changes across generations

There are some video gamers in my generation, which is the Baby Boomer generation.

One that is really popular with my crowd is called, Obamacare: The Quest for Subsidies.

No, wait. That one is not a video game, it is a distorted form a reality that is played on computers, but any game console with web browsing capabilities would also allow you to play.

In Obamacare, players from my generation, many of them with a multitude of medical conditions, try to get the government to subsidize their health care by forcing perfectly healthy youngster to purchase health insurance they do not need.

Actually, the true intent of this article is to provide an analogy of how the assorted threats that the younger generations always face change with the passage of time.

When I was growing up, all manner of authority figures from parents to teachers to elected officials and anyone else with a smattering of credibility exerted considerable effort into convincing everyone that the most diabolical threat to ever rear its ugly head was television.

Kids with disciplinary issues in school were often sent home with notes informing their parents that the problem was that little Johnny was watching too much TV, instead of reading books and doing his homework.

The funny thing is, little Johnny grew up and launched himself into a career in the television industry, where he was paid tremendous sums for watching television and creating new shows.

Then, little Johnny became adult Johnny. The threat to his children, he was told, was the untold hours his kids spent playing video games of all descriptions. Johnny’s kids were going to suffer as adults if they did not put down the controllers and go outside to play and breathe fresh air.

One of Johnny’s kids, straight out of college, got a job with one of the big players in the video game industry, and now makes a ton of money for testing and creating video games. He spends a lot of his time taking advantage of free bookie bets and online free bets, and his familiarity with technology means that he is more than a little adept.

I suppose those kids will be hearing something about how their kids are spending too much time fooling around with robots or time travel. Since I don’t know the future, I can’t be certain, but rest assured, it will be something.

Legal battles impact gambling trends

Is poker a game of skill or a game of chance?

If the President of the United States can go on television picking March Madness brackets, including even the women’s NCAA bracket where he picked UConn, haven’t we admitted that picking games involves some skill or knowledge? Sure, there’s a ton of luck involved, but you don’t randomly pick #1 seeds to fall in the first round of the men’s bracket and you probably have to have UConn and Notre Dame in the Final Four for the women.

If that’s the case, does it really make sense that there’s a Federal law blocking New Jersey from adding sports betting to their casinos? Why does Las Vegas get to have all the fun along with the mob?

There’s little rhyme or reason as to why things are the way they are. How did we get to this place?

Meanwhile there are always new developments and trends in the world of gaming, to things like the Billion Dollar Bracket that got so much attention for Dan Gilbert and Warren Buffett to cool card game trends, like Omaha Hi poker is a growing trend online. Fantasy sports games keep evolving, and now you have daily fantasy games for cash and survival pools, but don’t try to pick a game against the spread!

As all of this stuff becomes a bigger part of everyday life, we realize that most of it is harmless fun. Instead of being grumps to stop people from enjoying themselves, why not put programs in place to help those who get all compulsive about it?

Meanwhile, the NCAA bracket marches on with tons of great games and exciting finishes. Nobody won a billion dollars, but there will be plenty of happy winners in pools around the country. And in Las Vegas, the casinos get rich, while the ones in New Jersey are empty. Pretty strange . . .

Net neutrality issues will affect gamers

At first glance one wouldn’t necessarily think of hard core gamers as politically aware, but that’s been changing recently as issues like SOPA and the NSA have grabbed the attention of young people who view the Internet as an integral part of their lives. If you think about who would be most upset by having to pay more for Internet speeds we’ve come to expect, or to not have that speed when accessing sites that don’t have preferred status on their ISP, then it would be hard core gamers who would go nutz if their gaming experience was threatened. So the recent ruling on net neutrality will likely spark some serious interest from gamers when they realize that their lifestyle is one of those most threatened by the latest ruling that sets back net neutrality.

Of course this won’t affect just serious gamers. Anyone who loves online video and streaming content will likely be affected. Even casual gamers looking for a game of chess online or are searching William Hill bingo bonus 2013 will be irritated if the game slows down. And we really don’t know yet how serious this problem can become, and whether it will even be perceptable to the average person. Will a slight delay in chess or bingo get people upset? Again, it depends on what one defines as “slight” and how radical the ISPs get in forcing sites to pay up for easy access.

But when it comes to gamers, nothing short of instant reaction will be acceptable, so the political and commercial fallout might be quick. From a business point of view, it seems that there are lower margin ISPs who can win some serious business attacking the big boys and marketing a net neutral service. Of course this carries risk, as the bandwidth sucked up by new customers might really hurt margins, but there still might be a great business there playing volumes over margins.

The biggest problem may be with innovation, as startups and new gaming companies won’t have the funds to pay up for smooth Internet access.

The entire web experience will potentiall be threatened if net neutrality becomes a thing of the past. If people are going to stop this, it’s safe to expect gamers to be among those leading the charge.
