Vandal Twitch and High Command Katarina skins available

Vandal Twitch and High Command Katarina skins are now available from the store. Somehow I managed to miss the Twitch skin when digging through the data files for unreleased skins, and honestly, I mistook the Kat skin for Buccaneer Kat or whatever it’s called.

I really like the Twitch skin – it’s much better than Vandal Vlad. Kat, on the other hand, seems to suffer from Xin Zhao’s fate. Her skin selection lacks creativity in a big way, with the possible exception of the Kitty Kat skin (though really, who didn’t see that coming). I saw a thread a couple weeks back suggesting School Teacher Kat. She could throw rulers instead of daggers and still keep her sex appeal. Dig up that thread, Riot, and give the player that came up with it some bonus RP.

Maokai skins and bundles announced

The Maokai skin and bundle list is up, so I figured I’d post while patiently waiting for the spotlight to go live. I really like Maokai’s art so far, more than I’ve liked anyone’s art since Swain released.

For skins, Maokai’s getting Totemic Maokai and Charred Maokai, both of which look really good. Alistar’s also getting a new skin, Longhorn Alistar, which makes me wonder whether he’s getting his rework this patch. It wasn’t mentioned in the preview so I doubt it. Maybe two weeks from now?

Karma bundles and skins announced

The official bundles and skins post is up for today’s patch. For Karma, we’ll be seeing Sakura Karma and Sun Goddess Karma. As for the two other skins, today brings Lion Dance Kog’Maw, a Chinese New Year inspired skin that had been leaked on the forums, and Djinn Malzahar.

The Malzahar skin is expected, to say the least. He suffers as Xin Zhao does from a lack of originality regarding skins. It’s only fitting that we got a Djinn skin, I suppose. The Kog’Maw skin, on the other hand, looks really good. Kog’Maw has to have one of the best skin sets so far. His release skins were just recolors, but he’s since gotten Monarch Kog’Maw, Reindeer Kog’Maw, and now Lion Dance Kog. Good stuff.

Pantheongate drowns the forums

Perseus Pantheon for free.

I’ve been battling the hellish fever my girlfriend was kind enough to give me, so this is the first time I’ve logged onto the official forums today. Imagine my surprise when at least half the posts were about Pantheon. I was thrilled – finally his anti-fun design was being discussed. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the topic of discussion. Instead, people were complaining about Riot offering a promo code to unlock Pantheon and the Perseus Pantheon skin to inactive players.

Yup, you read that correctly. Players who stopped playing the game are being compensated some 1950 RP worth of store goods for their…absence. While I understand the idea – a lot of game companies offer some kind of teaser to bring you back after quitting a game – this was both poor timing and the wrong offer. Dedicated players have been restless for months now, wondering when we’ll see a new map or new game modes. To offer up freebies to the people who jumped ship is a big slap in the face. Granted, Tryndamere has already posted on the forums, saying:

We greatly value our loyal players and will have more info on this soon.

I can only imagine that means everyone will be getting the free champion/skin bundle, but who knows.

I also think Pantheon is the wrong champion to do this with. Do it with someone that’s sort of an even keel, not really at risk for serious developmental change in the coming months. Maybe I’m crazy, but I think Pantheon is one of the least fun characters to play against in the entire game. Heartseeker Strike is probably among my top five most poorly designed skills. At some point, I think Riot’s going to have to address that. Then again, the whole point of the dowry for returning to the game is to give the player a positive experience, and I think Pantheon will do just that. He’s a pretty easy guy to figure out, and when you get a good farm, you shred people.
