Reading Material: Josh Olson On Script Reading

Life's tough when you're a spartan. This isn’t exactly news, but it drubbed up an old dream that I might see a Halo movie before 2010. I found this article through a post on TechCrunch by the illustrious Michael Arrington. The article is written by Josh Olson, who you may remember as a potential writer for the Halo script. He was also nominated for a whole slew of awards for his 2006 screenplay, A History of Violence.

The article is a good read, but it makes it all the more depressing to think that a guy like Olson was actually going to pen the script for the Halo movie. I think any movie set in the Halo universe has incredible potential. It’s soul-crushing to see all of the talent involved in the project, and then think it might not get off the ground.

Speaking of involved talent, you should see District 9 if you haven’t. Great flick, and it was written by Neil Blomkamp and produced by Peter Jackson. Sigh.

The Best Big Daddy Cosplay

Harrison Krix in his Bioshock costume.I’m not into cosplay, but I love all the Flickr galleries dedicated to this kind of stuff. I found this one from the Reddit front page today and found myself overwhelmed with the outcome. The model, as you can see, is a near -perfect replica of Big Daddy from Bioshock, but there’s a living breathing human inside.

His name is Harrison Krix. His name is Harrison Krix. His name is…well yeah, it’s Harrsion Krix. Krix is a graphic designer from Atlanta who designs props for a living and also takes commission work. This project, though, was just for fun. You should give his blog a lengthy look-see. He fully details the method for making this monstrosity, and you can also see his other projects. The Portal gun is particularly cool. So is the weathered Kraken club. Harrison is the type of guy that makes me wish I was a whole lot more artistically inclined. Did I mention the drill arm (on Big Daddy) actually drills?

Resident Evil: Afterlife Getting Made Because It Makes Money

Milla in Resident Evil: Extinction.Shocking, right? Yeah, I didn’t think so either. Apparently Milla Jovovich, who has starred in the other Resident Evil movies, thought it was worth stating.

She dropped this bomb of epic proportions in an exclusive interview on Shock Till You Drop.

The movie makes money. If it makes more money than the last one, you’d think that people want to see another one, so we’ll do another one. There’s been a lot of interest online, there’s been a lot of letters from fans… film company. It’s not like I said, ‘Hey, honey! Let’s do another one right away!’ I mean, it’s an expensive film and it’s all business and if the third one didn’t do well, there wouldn’t be another one.

By “honey” she is of course referring to her fiancee/director, Paul W.S. Anderson.

Resident Evil: Afterlife is going to be shot in 3D, which Anderson has reportedly been preparing for by watching every 3D movie ever made. He’s sourcing the 3D work to same people in charge of the upcoming Avatar movie.

Interested in a 3D Resident Evil? I’m not, really. I love the game series but the movies just have never done it for me.

Sam Raimi to Direct Warcraft Movie

What will a Warcraft movie look like?Today Warcraft is synonymous with long hours grinding, more long hours raiding, and potentially socially destructive behavior. But do you remember the franchises humble roots? The simple graphics? The excellent campaigns? The franchise has been pegged for a movie for some time, and now there’s finally some real news to speak of. According to Variety, Sam Raimi has officially been pegged to direct the upcoming Warcraft movie.

Raimi, who is famous for movies like Spider-Man and Darkman is excited about the project. “At its core, Warcraft is a fantastic, action-packed story,” said Raimi. “I am thrilled to work with such a dynamite production team to bring this project to the big screen.” Who’s the dynamite production team? That would be Chris Roven’s Atlas Entertainment, the folks behind The Dark Knight. Production is set to begin after Spider-Man 4, which Raimi is supposed to finish in 2010.

There are still a lot of details missing from the movie. No one yet knows whether it will be live action or CG, and there’s still that issue of release date. If they’re not getting started until 2010, we’re years away from actually seeing the thing, time during which the franchise’s flagship, World of Warcraft, is likely to see slumping subscriptions in the face of new IP.

Then there’s the ubiquitous concern about games turned into movies. They’re notoriously horrible, but hopefully with Blizzard and Universal involved this one might be the exception to the rule.
