Blizzard COO Buys A Chunk Of The Steelers

Blizzard COO Paul Sams.Blizzard COO Paul Sams has reportedly gotten into the football business, and I’m not talking about a Madden competitor. No, Sams and his family are listed as one among ten of the new joint owners of the Pittsburgh Steelers franchise. The news came courtesy of the Steelers’ official website, which gives a quick bio for both Sams and his wife.

I guess when you’re at the top of a company whose biggest title has 11 million subscribers and sits on the verge of another expansion, whose critically acclaimed RTS has an upcoming sequel, and whose dungeon masher is about to become a trilogy you simply have more money than god and can buy just about whatever you want. That includes Super Bowl champions.

Healer Wanted – Willing To Pay

Blade's Edge Arena.Every World of Warcraft addict has wished at some point or another to make a living playing Blizzard’s MMO. As it turns out, there was at least one other addict willing to indulge that fantasy this weekend.

The posting has since been removed, but someone in the Bay area posted for a WoW arena partner to take him to a 2000+ rating. Thankfully, Kotaku was able to copy an image of the post before it was pulled. The position required 20 hours a week, a Death Knight for farming, and the ability to carry someone with too little skill and too much money to the top of the arena ranks.

The pay? How about $50/hour up to 1850 rating, $100/hour after the 1850 mark, and a $5000 bonus if you reach 2350. Since Kotaku picked up the story I’m sure the poster has received digital droves of hate mail and spam, mocking his abilities and rebuking his method. Wouldn’t it be cheaper to just buy an account at that level?

Blur Gets Bumped To 2010

Blur in action.Activision has decided to push Blur back for a 2010 release date, the company said in a press release today. The game, which is the newest from Bizarre Creations, was originally meant to launch in Q4 this year, featuring full damage modeling and a fresh take on vehicular combat.

Mike Griffith, the President and CEO of Activision Publishing, had this to say:

We are committed to making Blur a great new racing franchise, and we are very encouraged by the game’s design. The additional time will allow the studio to fully optimise the vision they set out to create for Blur including a distinctive and groundbreaking multiplayer mode that will appeal to a broad audience.

It makes me wonder what kind of shape the game is in. This close to projected release it should be pretty much finished. So what did they find that so desperately needed changed? Some bug? A nasty glitch? A system-killing bit of code? Whatever it was, it must have been serious.

That or they’ve been aware of this pushback for some time.

Hands-On Preview: “DJ Hero”

dj_hero_box

No matter how many new features they add to the latest installment of “Guitar Hero” or “Rock Band,” you’re still just strumming the same plastic guitar, only to a different set of songs. It’s a pretty harsh statement to be sure, but for those looking for a completely different music rhythm experience, Activision’s got you covered. “DJ Hero” may sound an awful lot like its axe-shredding cousin in spirit, but the gameplay mechanics couldn’t be any more different. Ahead of its October 27th release date, Activision hooked us up with a demo unit to test out the game, and though I was skeptical at first, just like my first day with “Guitar Hero,” addiction quickly set in.

The first thing you’ll notice about “DJ Hero” is the turntable controller. Though the last thing anyone really needs in this day and age is another piece of hardware that can only be used for one type of game, Red Octane has done an incredible job in constructing a solid peripheral that doesn’t take up too much space. A majority of the turntable is dedicated to the platter (AKA the place where the records go), which spins 360 degrees and includes three colored buttons: green, red and blue. The other section snaps on to either side of the platter (making it lefty friendly) and includes a crossfader, an effects switch, a Euphoria button, and all of the basic buttons from a standard controller.

After a lengthy (but completely necessary) tutorial by DJ Grandmaster Flash, I was finally given the chance to scratch, mix and sample my way through three different sets: Marvin Gaye’s “I Heard It Through The Grapevine” vs. the Gorillaz’s “Feel Good Inc.,” Gwen Stefani’s “Hollaback Girl” vs. Rick James’ “Give It To Me,” and Benny Benassi’s “Satisfaction” vs. the Black Eyed Peas’ “Boom Boom Pow.” As you can tell from those six songs alone, the final set list (which will include 100 tracks and over 80 different mixes) is pretty eclectic, though there’s still a strong focus on hip hop. That’s about what I expected considering the audience that “DJ Hero” is targeted for, but what I didn’t expect was just how challenging the actual game would be.

WoW Faction Changes Go Live At $30 A Pop

For the horde.I really hate the fees that come along with Blizzard services for World of Warcraft. Name changes are a completely absurd $10, server transfers are $25 per toon, and the “re-customization” service, which will include a name change, runs $15. Blizzard made an addition to the list of money-minting scams with the faction change. The service, which a lot of people have been after for some time, will run you a whopping $30. That’s almost 3 months of gameplay on a subscription plan, which is just ridiculous.

While the rest of the services seem to truly be aimed at character customization, and not necessarily just making money, this one looks to be designed to bleed players dry. For starters, there’s no included server transfer. I don’t know about you, but for my part, changing factions to play with other people means changing servers. I would think it’s pretty rare that your friends just happen to play the opposite faction on your server. Changing factions for this reason means you’ll be spending $55 per toon. Pretty rough.

Also, Blizzard is looking to roll out a Race Change feature in the future, at what I assume will be similarly rapacious prices. For a full list of limitations to the new service, check out Blizzard’s two-page FAQ.
