Reading Material: Josh Olson On Script Reading

Life's tough when you're a spartan. This isn’t exactly news, but it drubbed up an old dream that I might see a Halo movie before 2010. I found this article through a post on TechCrunch by the illustrious Michael Arrington. The article is written by Josh Olson, who you may remember as a potential writer for the Halo script. He was also nominated for a whole slew of awards for his 2006 screenplay, A History of Violence.

The article is a good read, but it makes it all the more depressing to think that a guy like Olson was actually going to pen the script for the Halo movie. I think any movie set in the Halo universe has incredible potential. It’s soul-crushing to see all of the talent involved in the project, and then think it might not get off the ground.

Speaking of involved talent, you should see District 9 if you haven’t. Great flick, and it was written by Neil Blomkamp and produced by Peter Jackson. Sigh.

Halo Natal Will Only Happen ‘When It Makes Sense’

Halo: Reach.Thank god for this. I’m not one of those crazy, tea-bagging, MyBrPwNzU type Halo players, but there is a soft spot in my heart for the franchise. My friends and I played a lot in college, and I’m always interested to see what they do next in the series. It was music to my ears when Microsoft said we wouldn’t see a Halo: Natal until “it makes sense.”

Alex Cutting, a Halo 3:ODST Producer, told VideoGamer in pretty clear language the plans for Natal and the Halo franchise.

A lot of people are interested in what Natal’s presence in Halo’s going to be. We are committing to only doing it when it makes sense. We are not going to produce a gimmicky feature that just takes advantage of motion controls when it doesn’t feel right.

Glad to hear someone has that kind of focus. Natal seems cool, but even the driving games looked horribly gimmicky. Cutting does think the tech has its place in almost any genre, just that it needs to be appropriately implemented.

I think Natal can be integrated into most genres in some way. I think FPS, there’s a lot to be said for dual stick control. But, you know, before dual sticks came around and before Halo: Combat Evolved established it on a console, people were pretty doubtful about that, that it could ever move from keyboard and mouse.

Pretty sure I agree with that, though I’m not sure Halo was the game to actually pioneer the dual analog stick control. The idea, at the very least, existed in games like Goldeneye, with those yellow buttons on the N64 controller. Using a stick isn’t exactly the kind of leap that controller to Natal will be. Despite the gratuitous horn-tooting, I like that Cutting makes Microsoft’s position pretty clear, and that’s there might be some thought behind the whole thing.

Madden 10 Sales Are ‘Discouraging’

Madden 10 for the Wii.It looks like the world is finally catching on that Madden doesn’t change much from year to year, and they’ve stopped buying. Sales are so bad, in fact, that even EA is calling the numbers “discouraging.”

How bad is bad? According to IndustryGamers, the Wii version of Madden only sold 67,000 copies in the month of August. In case you don’t remember, EA was supposed to completely rework the game for the Wii because the game just didn’t work on the platform. By this time last year, Madden 09 for the Wii had sold almost twice that number.

Sales for the other consoles looked a good bit better, but still not great for such a major franchise. EA shouldn’t be surprised, though. Why in the midst of a recession would gamers blow money on a game that, as I think I mentioned, doesn’t really change. When the industry’s down, you can bet the first thing to go will be yearly reworks of the same concept.

Forza 3 Goes Gold, Prepares For Demo

Forza 3 Motorsport.Microsoft and Turn 10 announced today that Forza 3 has gone gold more than a month before release. The game is set to hit North American shelves October 27th, but it looks like we’ll also have a chance to play the game early. A demo of the game is set to hit Xbox Live on September 24th.

The demo has been designed to show off all the features that are new to the franchise. We’ll get to see the new cockpit view, play with the rewind features, and probably spend most of our time looking at the new damage model. The demo is also going to support online leaderboards, giving us a chance to start the competitive racing a bit early.

As for cars the demo will be limited to just five:
– 2007 Porsche #80 Flying Lizard 911 GT3-RSR
– 2010 Audi R8 5.2 FSI quattro
– 2009 Ferrari California
– 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X GSR
– 2009 Mini John Cooper Works

If you haven’t purchased your pre-order, now might be the time to do so. Once that demo hits I’m sure plenty of people will be looking for pre-release sales.

Halo Waypoint Hits Your Hands Nov. 5

Master Chief in the desert. The Halo Waypoint Twitter account posted some fantastic information earlier today. The service designed to completely inundate you with anything and everything related to Halo launches on November 5th.

As the Twitter feed said:

Nov 5. Mark it on your calendar. That’s when you will get your hands (or controllers) on Halo Waypoint. 🙂

Just think of the massive influx of pimple-faced boys, those same 13 year-olds who corpse hump you and call you all sorts of non-PC names, that will be gracing the Xbox Live servers on the 5th, hoping for gratuitous Cortana nudity. It could be a great day, but it’s probably going to be a sad day.
