How Candy Crush Inspired the Online Slots Industry

Candy Crush Saga (“Candy Crush”) is an online Facebook video game. It was first released in 2012 and meanwhile it’s available as an app for almost all operating systems.

Basically, it’s a match-three puzzle video game, involving all kinds of candies, similar to the Sugar Rush slot machine online game. The aim is to get combinations of four or five candies in order to form „Special Candies.“ The game includes different episodes with different levels. Once all levels of an episode are completed, the player can move on to the next episode.

Candy Crush is the most successful Facebook Game, because it monetizes traffic in a smart way

Candy Crush has been released by King Digital Entertainment, the largest Facebook game developer ever. Since then, the game is King’s most popular product. Alone in the first month, the game was downloaded more than 10 million times.

Nowadays, it is the most successful Facebook game based on monthly active users (MAU). With 150 MAU, the game is by far the most successful Facebook game ever.

In 2013, some industry experts have estimated that the game generates between $1 million and $3 million in revenue every day. What makes Candy Crush so special is not only the fact that it attracts and fascinates many players, but it also monetizes its traffic in a smart way.

Players can spend their money via in-app purchases. Also, players can connect to other Facebook friends, which further increases traffic

Creating addiction is what makes a Facebook game successful

Candy Crush can be quite addictive. In fact, that is one of the reasons why the game became such a success story. “You can download it, there are no instructions and you just start playing. For a lot of people that’s appealing. They don’t have to invest time in learning to play,” says Sally Gainsbury, psychologist of Southern CrossUniversity.

In the beginning, it’s easy to win, but the game becomes more difficult when players proceed to a higher level. If a player loses all his playing lifes, he has to wait some time until he can continue the game. On the lower level, the penalty is just a few minutes, on higher levels it can be a few hours.

However, players can unlock the game for a fee. As they are looking for their next adrenaline boost, the temptation is high to pay that fee, which adds an extra revenue source.

The researcher shows, that while players are not paying anything in the beginning, they are paying a lot more when they reach a higher level.

Candy Crush has motivated the developers community to create more Facebook games

Being the most successful Facebook game ever, Candy Crush has had a huge impact on the online slots industry.

Inspired by Candy Crush, other companies tried to copy the concept of the game several times. Meanwhile, there are tons of Candy Crush alternatives, which are based on the same or a similar concept. However, games like CandySwipe are not nearly as successful as Candy crush.

The success of Candy Crush has also led to the development of other Facebook games. Simply the fact that King Digital Entertainment could earn such an insane amount of money with an easy online game has motivated the developers community to enter this field of business as well.
