DotA 2 coming “soon” – will you be playing?
Valve quietly mentioned that DotA 2 was fast approaching just yesterday. The message appeared at the bottom of a press release about the Steam content delivery system. “Soon, Dota 2 will be delivered using [the new system]” was all it said, but there’s a little more info circulating the web. Apparently MYM, one of the most popular DotA teams in the world, is headed over to Germany during Gamescom along with several other European and Asian teams, supposedly to play in a promotional tournament at the event.
It’s no secret that Europe and Asia both have exploding esports scenes, particularly with regard to the MOBA genre. Gamescom seems like an excellent place to showcase the most anticipated entrant in the MOBA field. As for release dates, Valve hasn’t said anything, but Gamescom runs from August 17-21. I would imagine we won’t see the final product for at least another month, which puts us at late September, early November, just like roughly every other game you’ve been hearing about for the past three years.
Personally, I’m excited for DotA 2. I really enjoy Valve games and I have faith in what they can bring to the genre, especially with regard to multiplayer features. As much as I enjoy League of Legends, the game is way behind in terms of social features. If Valve can deliver core technical features players have come to expect, it could see incredible growth and visibility in this sector of the industry.
That said, I also think DotA 2 could miss the mark with a lot of casual players. The strength/agility/intellect system from those games feels opaque and archaic, even as someone closely familiar with the game. I could absolutely see people who are accustomed to the AP/AD system get frustrated with learning a whole new system for categorizing champions and choose to stick with LoL.
Will you be playing DotA 2?

Haven’t played a lot of bad Valve games, so this one has been on my radar since it was announced; need to see some more info on its features before I insta-lock this one into my buy list.
Definitely thinking of giving it a try though, long as its not out the same month as Star Wars. lol
If i wanted to still be playing DOTA at thos point id be playing HON, the genre needs fresh ideas and new directions for gameplay, it looks to me like all valve are doing is rereleasing a mod for a 8 year old game on a new engine
spazticmonk: And you think they’re just going to sit on the game and do nothing once it comes out? DotA was extremely successful. It’s pretty obvious (and they’ve said themselves) that they’re going to continue updating the game and bringing new content.
I think Valve is a great company and I love their games, but Riot has put tons of effort into LOL and it shows. I have a hard time seeing DOTA 2 coming anywhere near LOL in quality simply because of the time LOL has been on the market. But, because it is a Valve game I will give it an install.
I’ve played way too much DOTA for my own good, so having said that, yes, I’ll probably try, no I probably won’t play seriously.
I’ve never played the original DotA, so I can’t say for sure whether I will or won’t. If it’s free I might pick it up.
On the whole though, I’ll probably stick with League of Legends. It’s the game I know, and I like the lore. Besides, denying sounds like a ***** of a mechanic.
It might be worth checking out. In terms of metas, LoL might’ve gone through every permutation worth mentioning – the support/carry, tanky jungler, tankydps/carrydps solos – and the farm-off style – given that every new champ will make up a decreasing % of total roster, it might be harder and harder for the game to change.
Maybe Dota2 has something else to offer? New roster, perhaps new metas to offer.
imma give it a shot, Played dota for 5yrs before lol (i love lol, only game I play as of now) but I’ll prob end up playing both.
im looking forward to this MOBA themed hat simulator, as ive always wanted a top down view of these brilliant hats on a number of fanciful characters.
im just worried the game will be too similar to the original DOTA, from what i could tell most abilities did not scale much and the cooldowns were much longer, on top of that a carries natural scaleing was downright freightening while their base stats were so low they would be outright dominated in the early game, league of legends smooths this out alot more carries have atleast reasonable early game stats and every one scales pretty well into late game just carries come out a little ahead.
i never got accustomed to all the different stats in the original dota but my experience with that game comes down to a bot game played as yonero.
Hat similator MOBA? Am I the only one that thinks that’d be AWESOME?!!
Man, Top Hat and Fez were already OP, and the devs went and BUFFED them last patch! Meanwhile, poor Beret is still useless, and I haven’t seen anyone wear a Tricorne in what feels like centuries! This is bulls***! Stupid dev-favored hats…
I’m totally jumping ship to Pantsmith!
DOTA 2 to be delivered using new Steam update. http://www.tomshardware.com/news/Steam-digital-distribution-bandwid

OMG they buffed Fez? Turban and Fedora have needed buffs for weeks, they’re useless in the current meta. It sucks that Tricorne gets insta-gibbed so easily, he’s such a cool toon with a nice kit. But if he lanes against Top Hat it’s GG, Top Hat’s already got BS damage what were dev’s thinking?!
Hoping Fedora gets a buff soon, he’s fun but not viable right now
