Tribunal seems to be an early success
I had a lot of doubts about the Tribunal when it was first announced. The idea of incentivizing players to punish one another seemed a little odd to me, even if I had played with hundreds of players who deserved a little wrist-slap. After using the system for a couple days, though, I have to admit, I’m kind of impressed.
The only reason I use the qualifying “kind of” is that the Tribunal’s real value can’t possibly be assessed until we can see some results. When Riot first starting banning players for bad behavior it seemed like games were about to get a whole lot nicer. However, the League of Legends playerbase was growing much faster than Riot and so the need for justice quickly outpaced the execution of that justice. The Tribunal has the potential to turn that around, hopefully expediting the punitive process for Riot and giving everyone a look at just how foolish the rage sounds when it isn’t spewed in the heat of the moment (it also sounds ridiculous then, but I can understand getting steamed here and there).
That said, it seems the Tribunal is an early success. I’ve completed my three cases in each of the past two days and actually enjoyed the process. It’s interesting to see the kinds of information that can actually be used to punish/pardon a player and the different ways each player in a game understands another player’s actions. I’ve already seen a couple complicated cases that involved a lot of bad behavior from all parties involved. It can be tough to reason out who, if anyone, should take the hit, and if the reported party is actually to blame.
Of course, I’ve also seen some very cut and dry cases. You don’t die 20 times in 20 minutes without trying, and you certainly don’t die that often several games in a row without some sort of effort. I’ve also been entertained and amused by the things people share on the forums. Part of the problem with ragers is that they disappear once the game is over and very few people are exposed to the ridiculous things they say. The Tribunal bumps that exposure by not only being thrown into the pool but also because players that see it are so keen to share it.
I’m really hoping we see results. It’s a cool system with some great potential. It would be a huge bummer if it didn’t work out. How has it seemed to you guys so far?

Has there been any indication that people are actually getting banned for the verdicts? I kinda see this as a form of entertainment in itself, but I would be shocked if Riot actually uses the votes to punish people. It’s kinda like the button on crosswalk signs – we all know that pushing it doesn’t do crap, but it feels good to press anyway.
I’ll be doing my 3 per day because it’s weirdly fun, not because I think it will make the community better. Honestly, the only way to judge the success of this program is if we notice an improvement in the average player’s personality in games. Less raging, more cooperation, etc.
Oh man, you just said it perfectly. The crosswalk analogy made me laugh out loud because it’s so dead on. Weirdly fun is also a perfect description.
I also understand the concern. I really hope the verdicts mean something.
I have the problem that I haven’t been able to pardon anybody yet. Maybe the 1st game is forgivable, sometimes even the 2nd and 3rd. But by the 4th or 5th game you look at, it’s generally clear that they are feeding or afking or have a generally negative attitude toward the game.
For example, I was reading one chat log, and I almost let the summoner off. And then I got to the 5th and 6th log, and I immediately hit Punish.
It’s like the evidence against is so overwhelming that it’s not really possible to vote to pardon. As far as I can tell, this is actually increasing Riot’s work, because now a lot of people are voting, but there’s not too much variation.
It’d be great if Riot maybe released some statistics after the full release. I want to see if people are actually getting pardoned.
From what I’ve seen in Riot forum posts, players who aren’t getting reported very often don’t make it to the Tribunal. I’ve had a couple cases with only 4-5 games, but from the sound of things that’s just a tiny sampling of the games in which that player was reported.
I would guess pardons will be quite rare. It would require an awful lot of false reports to get someone into the Tribunal in the first place.
That said, I think if someone is a bit ragey in one game but isn’t horribly acting out in his others, he should probably get a free pass.
great, I hope it works out; and I hope the punishment system is meaningful
… Kayle jumping outta monitor and stabbing or b—tch slapping silly the offender would be sensible resolution
I just got banned for 1 day,so i think it works pretty well.
I’m not saying i didn’t deserve it,but most people will just do other things during that 1 minute in which you’re supposed to gather information on the player, then press punish.Almost 90% of the players do it for the free IP,and punish is the most common option
I sincerely doubt your made up statistic Voidbane. I read as much as is necessary which is almost invariably longer than the forced minute.
However of course punish is the most common option these are people who have been reported based on their recorded inappropriate actions. I’d be extremely worried if punish wasn’t the most common.
Honestly, I hope there are a large number of permanent bans going out as well. All the cases I’ve read through so far are like competitive entries in the “Internet’s Biggest Douchebag” contest. They wouldn’t be missed.
So far I’m 8 Punishes and 1 Skip. The skip was because there was German language involved that I couldn’t read.
Every case has been a no-brainer.
Honestly, just think how the stupid people and the trolls are outnumbering the normal people, then think how those trolls and idiots are going to the tribunal to ban others.Trust me,I know that what I’m saying is true, and thinking that other people are like you and read thoroughly every case is just an optimistic illusion.
Riot have stated multiple times they’ll be banning troll voters from the tribunal.
