I seriously cannot fathom the answer to that question. Originally it looked as though Riot was going to let players self-rank for the early games. You would select a box, as it shows in the pic above, placing you with players who had selected similar ranks. Apparently that didn’t go through, though. I’ve been paired with people in their 20s in both games I’ve played so far. I’ve also had rage quitters on the opposing team in both games.
This really doesn’t make for a fun initial experience for everyone. I hate to be the guy crowing about ELO, but as mentioned previously, I’m in the top 3000 player base, potentially as high as top 1500. There’s no way I should be playing with level 22s. It’s not fun for me. It’s not fun for them. One of the things I love most about this game is the competitive environment and it’s totally out the window with an ELO reset.
There is a chance ELO has been marginally reset, meaning they may have just normalized everyone’s ELO a bit to give some players a fresh start, but still try to pair you by level and some measure of your skill. I will say, judging by the players I’ve seen thus far, it doesn’t look as though that’s the case.
Are you guys experiencing severe skill gaps?

This whole Season One thing is confusing me. The new interface, normal vs ranked matches, ELO being reset. Maybe I just need time to adjust. I logged today just to buy Xin Zhao and see the new interface (I didn’t have time for a match). The menu is a bit laggy for me, I dunno if it’s the server or my computer. I haven’t been able to play a game, though, in the last 4 days ’cause every night it’s either busy or unavailable, so my impressions on ranked matches and the new champ will have to wait.
You can use the konami code to get around the busy unavailable status. up up down down left right. but anyways i found the 1st few games the skill lvls varied greatly. but once u win a few ull notice a difference in players u play with.
Or you can just hit F5… is “konami code” slang for this or does it actually do something? I always seem forum cracks about this but missed the memebirth.
Your confused…
The selection boxes is only for new players (not for ranking). It exists.
They kept ELO for normal games however there is currently no ELO for ranked games. In fact there is a different ELO/ranking for each type of ranked game.
Therefore it will probably take a few days for things to sort themselves out.
I have had two games since s1 release. First where my entire team fed all game and didn’t know what draft mode was, and the second the server locked up on everyone in a 5′s match. Since, I have not logged. Going to let them straighten things out a little first.
A better question than who has the higher true ELO is which team has Xin. Cuz if he’s not banned, and the player manning him has half a brain, that team wins. It’s Jax+Ez+Udyr+Panth’s OP phases rolled into one… which is too bad because he is damn fun to play.
2nd ranked game, had 2/5 people rage quit in first 3 minutes cuz they hated the attitude of a third player. All three were strangers, all three acted like they were in middle school. I got stuck playing Sion, designated tank for a 3v5. Not fun. The problem is that the retard distribution is random right now, and the likehood of having several on your team will remain high till you hit higher ELO’s. More reason to get there.
@Anon Thanks for the tip on the selection box.
I know that each mode will have separate ELO, but I still don’t think they should have reset things the way they did. It would have been easy enough to carry over ELO so we aren’t all getting matched against random super lowbies. Granted, I’ve been lucky enough to be in a situation that I could carry my team in 6 games. Other players, though, are getting fed losses because of this ELO reset, and I think that’s kind of a lame way to kick off ranked games.
In my case, it’s been a little difficult to enjoy ranked games, with all the crippling lag and the poor teammates that you get from time to time (in one game in particular, a Warwick refused to jungle and instead fed the top lane, we ended something like 5/15 cuz of him). I seriously hope that Riot fixes the problems that are rising in this Season, because otherwise we’re in for a couple of sucky games in the mean time.
BTW, the code to enter when the servers are in ‘busy’ its up, down, left, right, up, up, down, down
OK, this is starting to drive me nuts. Every game tonight, 4 melee, 1 range (no support) vs 4 melee, 1 range. Heavy tower pushing early, no last hitting (from my team at least!). I tried doing support once but man, what a waste, not doing that again.
It’s taking me a while to adjust to playing like this again. Can’t wait till I’m back in whatever bracket I used to be in.
Entering an ELO means some people will smurf; they’re probably sadistic and pathologically insecure or simply suck at life, and will ruin the game for newcomers.
Carrying over ELO means that ranked play effectively started from Day 1; in that case, Season One never really starts. Would be interesting to see if they reset ELO for season 2.
That said, I agree with you Jeff and the other posters. Mixed ELO can be brutal. It was frustrating to watch my 9-1 score end with 9-6 and a loss due to a Panth on my team with 1-12 score that started ever line we had the displeasure of reading with “OMG WTF!!” while saying “STFU!! I NEED TO FARM I KNOPW WHAT I’M DOING!” after using his ult’ing onto the wolf camp during what was supposed to be a team fight.
There are times when I wish I wish I could reach into the monitor and bitch-slap some of the dumbasses who should be playing with their Fisher Price toys instead of wasting my time that of nearly a dozen other people.
Honestly I know I’m not high elo, but what has ruined S1 for me has been leavers. I’ve played 16 games and in 7 of those my team has had a leaver and in 2 more the other team has had a leaver. I know I’m in god-awesful low elo range right now because despite that 4 of the 4v5s have been 50+ min competitive affairs and Cho/me (Amumu) carried our team to victory despite a feeding yi in another. I only hope that something is done with the leaver marks.
